Professor Benicio Frey, McMaster University
Evidence from epidemiological and meta-analytic surveys show that individuals with heightened sensitivity to experience mood-related episodes during female-reproductive life events, such as the premenstrual and postpartum periods, are more likely to be diagnosed with the bipolar spectrum. Converging evidence suggests that this may also be true during perimenopause. While high-quality randomized, controlled clinical trials are lacking, clinicians face a daily struggle to use evidence from other areas of medicine to help their patients. In this presentation, we will review and discuss the current state of the scientific evidence and ways that clinicians and scientists are using the limited research to support good quality clinical care in this population.
Speaker: Professor Benicio Frey is a Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University, Academic Head of the Mood Disorders Program, and Medical Director of the Women’s Health Concerns Clinic at St. Joseph's Healthcare.
Moderator: Prof. Donghao Lu, Institute for Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet.
