Abstract:

Body representation is composed of dynamic (i.e., body schema) and static (i.e., body image) processes. Body ownership, that is the feeling that one’s body belongs to oneself, is considered by many as static. In this talk I will discuss from multiple perspectives how body ownership is rather dynamic, and dependent on how humans process nearby space and the location of body parts. First, I will bring evidence from a study of rare neuropsychological patients who have sustained brain damage which disrupted their sense of body ownership, and show how this impairment may be linked to defective updating of their ongoing dynamic body representations. Then, I will present experimental evidence of the dynamic nature of body ownership based on bodily illusions in healthy individuals (rubber hand illusion, full body illusion). Together, the results suggest a tight and dynamic connection between the sense of body ownership and the prediction of where the body is located in space.
