Seminar description

Ageing is a multifactorial process in which mitochondrial dysfunction plays an essential role. In aging and age-related diseases, dysfunction of mitochondrial dynamics and turnover results in the accumulation of damaged mitochondria that impair the capacity of cells, tissues and organs. Mitochondrial dysfunction also affects the capacity of the immune system to respond to pathogens and can be importantly involved in the incapacity of the immune system to respond to respiratory virus and other pathogens. This seminar will focus on maintenance of mitochondrial function during aging and age-related diseases as a therapeutical target in order to improve functional capacity in the elderly.
