KI Lifestyle4Health network seminar on "Figuring out when and how physical activity affects brain health – experimental and epidemiological approaches"

Speakers: Maria Ekblom and Örjan Ekblom

Description

E-PABS is the center of Excellence in Physical Activity, Healthy Brain Functions and Sustainability at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH). E-PABS currently encompasses 13 different subprojects, including large-scale epidemiological investigations, intervention studies to promote lifestyle changes as well as mechanistic studies on primarily cerebral blood flow and biomarkers for neurodegeneration and neurotrophy.

The seminar will be about the aspirations of E-PABS to create a sustainable network of stakeholders and together try to figure out for whom and how physical activity can promote healthy brain functions in different parts of life. We will also present what we see as some major challenges in exercise neurophysiology and physical activity epidemiology, with focus on two specific subprojects in E-PABS,  “Physical activity and mental health in young twins” and “Dynamics of neurotrophins during exercise at different intensities.“

About the speakers

Maria Ekblom received her PhD from the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet in 2004 and is currently a Professor in Physical Activity and Health at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. Maria has led many intervention studies investigating neural mechanisms for motor control, cognition, and mental health. She leads E-PABS, a research center that aims to coproduce knowledge on how physical activity can promote healthy brain function.

Örjan Ekblom received his PhD from the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet in 2005 and is currently a Professor in Physical Activity and Health at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. Örjan has led many large studies investigating how physical activity patterns are related to health. He has also acted as an advisor to several intervention studies aiming to investigate how physical activity affects mental health.
