Many member states of the EU, including Sweden since 1995, have ''officially tuberculosis free'' cattle herds. But that is not the case in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, where 5-6% of cattle herds tested positive in 2009 and the percentage is still rising in the UK. In 2015 about 36,000 infected cattle were slaughtered and cost the taxpayers about £100m.

It is still unclear why the UK and Ireland cannot eradicate bTB but it is postulated that the badger being a wildlife reservoir is an important factor.
