In this session, results from a recent publication by Jakob Norgren et al. will be presented. The ApoE genotypes 𝜀-3/4 and 𝜀-4/4 constitute ≈30% of the Nordic population but ≈70% of diagnosed Alzheimer cases. For this sub-sample, a Lower-carbohydrates-fiber-Higher-fat-protein composite score was associated with better cognitive performance among non-diabetic older adults at risk of dementia (n=676). The results are compatible with published hypotheses that the ancestral 𝜀-4 allele might provide a relatively lower adaptation to a diet high in carbohydrates and plant-based food sources. Could precision nutrition prevent dementia?
About the speaker
Jakob Norgren completed his PhD in 2023 at KI/NVS, Division of Clinical Geriatrics, with professor Miia Kivipelto as his main supervisor. The title of the thesis was The Impact of Macronutritional Composition and Ketosis on Cognitive Health: From Normal Aging to Alzheimer’s Disease. He recently started a postdoc in Maria Eriksdotter’s group at the same division, where he’s working with a project on drug repurposing led by Sara Garcia Ptacek. Alongside this project, Jakob will continue with studies on the impact of diet on cognitive health. He’s particularly interested in gene–diet interactions related to ApoE-genotype.
