As speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working with children with speech sound disorders (SSDs), a common challenge is the variability in progress despite providing effective therapy. Ensuring consistent and positive outcomes requires identifying risk factors for limited progress and predictors of therapeutic success. In the era of big data analytics and precision medicine, SLPs strive to improve diagnostic accuracy, deliver targeted interventions, and apply insights from large-scale studies to enhance clinical decision-making.

This presentation highlights findings from key studies—the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (Wren et al., 2012; 2016), the Early Language in Victoria Study (Morgan et al., 2017), and the Ontario Motor Speech Service Delivery Pathway (Namasivayam et al., 2015; 2018; 2019; 2023)—to provide a clinical checklist of risk factors and predictors for successful therapy outcomes in children with SSDs. Key predictors of limited outcomes include speech complexity (e.g., syllable structure, sound class, articulatory)
