Abstract (på engelska)
In order to test whether human brain development depends on experience after birth people born blind have been investigated. This research has indicated a considerable potential of the developing brain to adapt to an atypical situation. To test whether typical brain development depends on adequate experience after birth, we investigated humans who were born blind due to bilateral dense cataracts and whose sight was restored later in life by cataract removal surgery. A lack of visual or multisensory recovery would indicate sensitive periods for typical brain development. In my talk I will provide behavioral, neurophysiological as well as functional and structural brain imaging data cumulating to the hypothesis that despite considerably recovery of bottom-up visual processing the pooling of neural activity along the visual processing hierarchy as well as the integration of bottom up and top down information depend on early visual input.
