Föreläsningar och seminarier Clinicum seminarium: En introduktion till överlevnadsmått i populationsbaserade cancerstudier
This seminar is hosted by Clinicum.
We welcome anyone with an interest in methods used in medical research to join the seminar via zoom. No pre-registration is needed.
The seminar will focus on concepts and interpretation and is suitable for audience without a previous background in the field.
Speaker; Therese M-L Andersson, senior lecturer, MEB, KI.
Population-based cancer patient survival is an important measure for the evaluation of cancer patient care that can, for example, give an understanding of the population impact of changes in treatment (in comparison to, say, clinical trials with selected patient groups). Relative survival is a measure that is often used in this type of studies, since it can estimate the net survival associated with the cancer in question without requiring cause of death information.
In this seminar we will give an introduction to relative survival and how it is typically reported in population-based register studies. We will also describe other useful measures of cancer patient survival, for example loss in life expectancy and survival in the presence of competing risks (crude survival), that can be estimated within a relative survival framework. Examples of published clinical epidemiology studies that have reported these measures will be presented to reinforce the concepts.
