Call for funding - SFO Stem cells and Regenerative medicine 2023-2024
The aim of the SFO Stem cells and Regenerative medicine is to support research and infrastructure within the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine at Karolinska Institutet.
The SFO for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine has decided to allocate up to 24 million SEK for 12 research grants according to the same strategy as for previous years. Research grants will be allocated for 2023 but depending on governmental and university decisions successful applicants may be awarded grants for a second year (2024) without new application. The call encompasses basic and clinical research grants. The exact number of research grants per category will depend on the number of submitted applications, and quality of the applications.
Eligible projects will be supported with a total of 2 MSEK/year. Research grants can be used to cover salaries, running costs, equipment and administrative costs. Indirect costs for the research project specified in the application must not exceed the INDI level at the receiving department.

Call for projects – SRP Diabetes Postdoc Fellowships 2023
This call is the first step in the third round of recruitments of postdoctoral fellows with an expected start date in the autumn of 2023. Principal investigators at Karolinska Institutet are hereby invited to submit a project for consideration to the SRP Diabetes Postdoctoral Fellowship Program within basic, translational, clinical, and/or epidemiological research with an emphasis on diabetes and its comorbidities (e.g. cardiovascular and liver disease). Projects should have a clear relevance for diabetic disease and principal investigators should document their track record in diabetes related research. Applications will be externally evaluated.

Forskningsmånader för kliniskt verksamma doktorander inom cancerområdet – Radiumhemmets Forskningsfonder
Utlysningens syfte är att möjliggöra för doktorander inom cancerområdet att genomföra sina doktorandprojekt genom att finansiera forskningstid. Medlen utlyses som lönemedel för kliniskt verksamma doktorander. Medel kan sökas från och med registrering som doktorand till disputation, maximalt för tre månader/år under högst tre år.

Forskningsanslag – Stiftelsen Clas Groschinskys Minnesfond
Stiftelsen stöder medicinsk forskning. Forskningsanslag kommer år 2023 att ges för forskning inom följande områden:
- Immunterapi mot cancer
- Cancer i bukspottkörteln
- Autoimmuna endokrina sjukdomar
Inom dessa områden riktas stödet till forskare, som efter disputation och postdoktoral eller klinisk vidareutbildning, är i färd med att bygga upp ett eget projekt och forskargrupp. År 2023 kan stöd sökas av forskare som disputerat 2013-2021 och som ännu inte har fast tjänst i universitetsorganisationen eller har större garanterat anslag för fem år eller längre tid.
Som regel beviljas anslag för högst två år, men ett år i taget. Undantag kan dock göras för högprioriterade projekt eller när andra särskilda omständigheter föreligger. Forskningsanslagen uppgår till högst 300.000 kronor per anslag.

Sigbrith Björkelunds Stiftelse
Stiftelsen delar ut bidrag till kvinnliga forskare vid Karolinska Institutet eller Uppsala Universitet verksamma inom områdena neurologi, psykiatri eller hjärt-kärlsjukdomar. Stiftelsens bidrag avser i första hand att finansiera kostnader i samband med vistelse vid forskningsinstitution utanför Sverige, bidrag som på annat sätt stödjer mottagarens forskningsarbete kan även komma i fråga.
Mottagare ska ha avlagt läkarexamen och antingen befinna sig i senare delen av utbildningen på forskarnivå eller ha avlagt doktorsexamen under de fem senaste åren.
För utdelning 2023 avser Stiftelsen att lämna ett eller flera bidrag om vardera högst 200 000 kronor. Ansökan ska vara Stiftelsen tillhanda senast 31 december 2022 för medel som primärt avses att nyttjas under perioden juli 2023 – juni 2024.

Utlysning av Japanstipendier för år 2023
Välkomna att söka stipendier för forskning, studier, examensarbete eller praktik i Japan.
1. Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation (SJSF). Den svenska sektionen av stiftelsen utlyser anslag och stipendier för forskning och studier i Japan, för att främja utbytet mellan Japan och Sverige.
• Ämnen: forskning eller utbildning inom naturvetenskap, teknik, medicin, samhällsvetenskap, ekonomi, humaniora (inkl. japanska) och journalistik.

• Behöriga att söka: studenter och yngre forskare från samtliga universitet och högskolor i Sverige. Sökanden skall ha fast anknytning till Sverige.
• Vistelse i Japan: från 3 månader till 1 år, från och med april 2023 till mars 2024.

Joint transnational call - Natural History Studies addressing unmet needs in Rare Diseases
The European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases invites proposals for its joint transnational call on Natural History Studies addressing unmet needs in Rare Diseases. This enables scientists in different countries to conduct efficient, innovative and high-quality natural history studies which will facilitate understanding of the disease’s or group of disorders’ progression throughout the lifespan of a patient. The goal of these studies is to collect and analyze comprehensive patient data to define targets for future therapies, taking into consideration innovation, safety, and efficacy. Research proposals should cover at least one of the following areas:
- Estimation of disease prevalence;
- Identification of biomarkers/companions for the diagnosis/prognosis of a RD;
- Identification of biomarkers/indicators/predictors of a rare disease or group of disorders (e.g. having the same aetiology) onset/progression (including collection of genetic, physiological, environmental data or variables….);
- Identification of relevant endpoints for future studies that include potential biomarkers, querying patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and quality-of-life measures;
- Identification of biomarkers/variables for therapeutic approaches (pharmacology, drug repurposing, gene therapy, RNA therapy, cell therapy, medical devices…)
Each consortia must include four to six PIs from at least four different countries. No more than two partners may come from the same country. Projects may be funded for up to three years and according to the national or regional funding organisations' regulations.

EASD/Novo Nordisk Foundation diabetes prize for excellence
The European Association for the Study of Diabetes and Novo Nordisk Foundation invite nominations for their diabetes prize for excellence. This recognises a body of research that has led to significant advances in the understanding, prevention or treatment of diabetes or its complications. Research may be basic or applied.
Employees of universities, hospitals or other non-profit institutions are eligible to be nominated. Candidates may be from any country and must be nominated by member of the EASD. Self-nominations are not accepted. Candidates should be currently active in diabetes research and continuing their research activity for the following five years.
The prize is worth DKK 6 million of which DKK 1m is a personal award and the remaining DKK 5m is for research purposes.

Rising Star fellowship programme - European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD)
The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes, in collaboration with Novo Nordisk, invites applications for its rising star fellowships programme. This enables researchers in the field of diabetes to present an overview of their past and ongoing research activities during a multidisciplinary research symposium at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting. The aim is to identify young researchers who are developing their research activities in Europe and encourage innovative research in the field of diabetes.
Applicants must be paid-up members of the EASD and have received their highest degree no more than five years for basic scientists or seven years for clinicians before 1 January in the year the fellowship is awarded.
Four fellowships are available, each worth €30,000. Additionally, travel expenses, hotel and registration costs are covered.

PhD fellowships - Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds invites applications for its PhD fellowships. These enable junior scientists to pursue a PhD project in basic biomedical research at an internationally leading laboratory in Europe. Research must be experimental, in the field of basic biomedical research and aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge.
European citizens working in Europe or overseas, and non-European citizens pursuing their PhD projects in Europe may apply. They should be at most eight years from achieving their first degree on the closing date. The applicant should not have been working on their project for more than six months at the deadline.
Fellowships are granted for two years with the possibility of renewal for a 18 months. The basic monthly stipend is €1,650. Additionally, awardees may receive a country-related premium of between €300 and €1,700, €150 for project related costs, and spouse, child and childcare allowance.

ERC Advanced Grants 2023 call
On December 8th, 2022, the European Research Council (ERC) will opened its call for applications for ERC Advanced Grants 2023. These support ground-breaking, high-risk high-gain projects carried out by an established, leading principal investigator in any field of research. Applicants are expected to be active researchers who have a track record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years and should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions.
Each grant is worth up to €2.5m over five years. An additional €1m may be requested.

Mechanism for Time-Sensitive Research Opportunities in Environmental Health Sciences (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed): NIH
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is intended to support novel environmental health research in which an unpredictable event or policy change provides a limited window of opportunity to collect human biological samples or environmental exposure data. The primary motivation of the FOA is to understand the consequences of natural and human-made disasters, emerging environmental public health threats, and policy changes in the U.S. and abroad. A distinguishing feature of an appropriate study is the need for rapid review and funding, substantially shorter than the typical NIH grant review/award cycle, for the research question to be addressed and swiftly implemented. The shortened timeframe will be achieved by more frequent application due dates and expediting peer review, council concurrence and award issuance. The entire cycle, from submission to award, is expected to be within 3-4 months. Examples of appropriate studies include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assessing short-term health impacts resulting from environmental exposures following a natural or human-made disaster, using biomarkers, survey instruments, medical assessments, or other appropriate methods.
- Collecting biospecimens and/or data on exposures to environmental agents immediately following a natural or human-made disaster to use in assessment of the effects of these exposures on short- or longer-term health outcomes.
- Examining the environmental health impact of rapid changes in policy or legislation that affect the environment.

NIMH is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to outline priorities for research that incorporates a multi-dimensional perspective into studies of the neural mechanisms underlying emotional and/or social representations. The ability to integrate a broad array of emotional and social information is impaired in many mental disorders, yet the neural mechanisms underlying these processes are not well understood. This NOSI encourages studies in humans and animals investigating how diverse multi-dimensional emotional and/or social cues are represented across brain circuits that are important for mental health relevant cognitive, social, and affective behavioral functions. The term “multi-dimensional” refers to the consideration of multiple modalities (e.g., social, emotional, visual, and auditory), the effects of complex contexts and development, and/or dynamic processes that unfold over a variety of temporal scales.

The intent of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to support: research on the therapeutic application of an oral CGRP antagonist, rimegepant, in migraine, headache, and other diseases where CGRP antagonism may be of clinical benefit; the development of tools for clinicians and patients to improve the care of migraine patients; and research regarding health disparities associated with migraine. The following areas of research will be considered in-scope:
- Rimegepant: Novel or unexplored applications in the treatment of migraine, headache and other disease areas; drug combination studies in migraine, key migraine subpopulations. Projects may include basic, translational, clinical or real-world evidence research. Basic and translations studies should focus on clinically relevant research questions.
- Migraine headache (general): Impact on quality of life and patient reported outcomes; development of clinical tools/methods for monitoring/improving patient care and treatment outcomes. Projects may include clinical or real-world evidence research, as well as other appropriate methodologies for the proposed research
Budget: Individual projects requesting up to $500,000 USD will be considered. Pfizer anticipates awarding up to 4-6 grants. Indirect costs not to exceed 28% of direct costs. Indirect costs should be included in the total budget for the grant request.

The Bosarge Family Foundation-Waun Ki Hong Scholar Award for Regenerative Cancer Medicine This award represents a joint effort to encourage and support postdoctoral or clinical research fellows to conduct highly novel and provocative research in the field of regenerative cancer medicine and to establish a successful career path in this field. The research proposed for funding may be translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to enhancing the physiology of cancer survivors (and/or mitigating the negative effects of their cancer treatment) using regenerative medicine approaches.
Eligibility: Applicants must have a doctoral degree (including PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) in a related field and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. Have completed their most recent doctoral degree within the past five years (i.e., degree cannot have been conferred before July 1, 2018 the formal date of receipt of doctoral degree is the date the degree was conferred as indicated on your diploma and/or transcript). Applicants with a medical degree must have completed their most recent doctoral degree or medical residency - whichever date is later - within the past five years. Applicants must be AACR members.
Budget: This award provides a two-year grant of $120,000 to support the salary and benefits of the fellow. A partial amount of funds may be designated for non-personnel expenses, such as research/laboratory supplies, equipment, publication charges for manuscripts that pertain directly to the funded project, and other research expenses. Indirect costs are not permitted.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR NextGen Grants for Transformative Cancer Research
These awards represent the AACR’s flagship funding initiative to stimulate highly innovative research from young investigators. This grant mechanism is intended to promote and support creative, paradigm-shifting cancer research that may not be funded through conventional channels. It is expected that these grants will catalyze significant scientific discoveries and help talented young investigators gain scientific independence.
Eligibility: At the start of the grant term on July 1, 2023 applicants must hold a tenure-eligible appointment (or equivalent, if institution does not follow a tenure system) at the rank of assistant professor (appointments such as research assistant professor, adjunct assistant professor, assistant professor research track, visiting professor, or instructor are not eligible. Applicants that have progressed to associate professor appointments are also not eligible.)
Or, have held a tenure-eligible assistant professor appointment for no more than three years
(cannot have held a tenure-eligible appointment prior to July 1, 2020). Applicants must be AACR members.
Budget: The grants provide $450,000 over three years for expenses related to the research project, including indirect costs.

Fellowship grants, Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, US
The PKD Foundation’s principal mission is to support basic, translational and clinical research that will benefit patients with autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD and ARPKD). The PKD Foundation is interested in fostering research in the areas relevant to PKD with the goal of furthering our understanding of the physiological, biochemical, molecular and genetic mechanisms of this disease. Under this RFA, the PKD Foundation solicits research fellowship applications in the following areas:
- Basic research – to enhance understanding of molecular basis of PKD and its pathobiology
- Translational research – to accelerate development of predictive and therapeutic strategies for PKD
- Clinical research – such as small pilot studies
- Epidemiology/data analysis research – to conduct secondary data analyses utilizing existing database resources, or to develop new statistical methodologies or test hypotheses using existing data
Eligibility: Applicants may not have completed the equivalent of more than four years of research training (excluding clinical training) after completion of the M.D. (or equivalent) or postdoctoral research training after the Ph.D. at the time the award begins. This does not include medical leave or FMLA. Applicants may also not hold another full fellowship award although institutional supplemental support is acceptable. Commit a minimum of 75% of time to research and training during the fellowship period.
Budget: The Award of $60,000 per year will be provided for two years (grant total of $120,000). No Indirect Costs are paid on this award.

Research grants, The Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation, US
DTRF General Grant Program DTRF funds research that will advance current scientific knowledge about desmoid tumors, moving toward the development of new treatment options and bringing us closer to our ultimate goal of a cure. To this end, DTRF is particularly interested in innovative and translational research projects. DTRF will consider applications across the spectrum of research from basic science to clinical trials and correlative studies. Eligibility: Applicants must have an academic rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
Budget: The grant amount may be up to $65,000 USD per year for a grant term of one to three years. Indirect costs are not permitted.
DTRF Early-Career Investigator Program DTRF funds research that will advance current scientific knowledge about desmoid tumors, moving toward the development of new treatment options and bringing us closer to our ultimate goal of a cure. Specifically, this RFP seeks applications from early-career investigators (e.g. Postdoctoral/Clinical Fellows, Instructors, Assistant Professors). Applicants are required to apply with the support of a mentor with an established track record of successful research. This funding mechanism is intended to support and help establish early-career researchers in desmoid tumor-focused research. Further, this grant program is designed to help researchers gather preliminary data to enable them to apply for funding to support a more fully developed line of research in the future.
Eligibility: Applicants must have an MD, PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree, academic rank of Postdoctoral/Clinical Fellow, Instructor or Assistant Professor. A minimum of 75% of the applicant’s time during the early-career Investigator period must be allocated as protected time for all research activities.
Budget: The grant amount may be up to $30,000 USD per year for a grant term of one to three years. Indirect costs are not permitted.
