Upcoming ERC Synergy call

The tentative deadline for applications to the next ERC Synergy Grant call (officially ERC-2023-SyG) is 8th November 2022. The dates and details may change and cannot be confirmed until the corresponding annual ERC Work Programme and guide for applicants is released (mid-summer 2022), but the ERC does not anticipate any major changes in this funding scheme. These are very competitive grants, and preparations for applying should be made well in advance. Please contact Tamsin Lindström at KI Grants Office if you are interested in applying for an ERC Synergy Grant.

What proposals are eligible?

Applications can be made in any field of research but must demonstrate that the proposed research cannot be carried out by a single PI working alone. Synergy projects should enable substantial advances at the frontiers of knowledge, stemming, for example, from the cross-fertilisation of scientific fields, from new productive lines of enquiry, or new methods and techniques, including unconventional approaches and investigations at the interface between established disciplines. Proposals will be evaluated on the sole criterion of scientific excellence, including outstanding synergy. These are very competitive grants. Please consult the ERC Synergy project summaries.

Who can apply?

ERC Synergy Grants fund small groups of two to four PIs working in an integrated fashion to bring together different skills and resources to tackle ambitious research problems. PIs must present an early achievement track-record or a ten-year track-record, whichever is most appropriate (please consult the lists of ERC Synergy grantees). One PI per 'Synergy Grant group' at any one time can be hosted or engaged by an institution outside of the EU or Associated Countries.

How much?

Synergy Grants can be up to a maximum of € 10 million for a period of 6 years. An additional € 4 million can be requested under certain circumstances.

Follow this link to register for the national ERC Synergy webinar webinar on June 15th.

Research grant, DoD Funding Opportunities for Melanoma Research Program (MRP): Department of Defense

The clinical, research, and patient communities traditionally view prevention as the use of sunscreen/blockers to protect melanocytes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The MRP tasks the research community to redefine prevention to include the entire melanomagenesis process for all variants of melanoma. A new paradigm of prevention includes improved detection and monitoring capabilities, as well as inhibiting the initiation of melanoma, the emergence from tumor dormancy, and the development of metastases. To be considered for funding, applications must address at least one of the following FY22 MRP Focus Areas:

  • Research across the entire spectrum (biology, etiology, prevention, diagnosis and detection, prognosis, treatment, and quality of life) for rare melanomas (e.g., uveal, acral, mucosal, pediatric) in patients and model organisms.
  • Identify and understand risk factor determinants for melanoma, including rare subtypes.
  • Develop prediction and surveillance tools for distinguishing patient populations at risk for second primary/recurrence and/or metastasis.
  • Understand how precursor lesions and environmental/endogenous factors influence melanomagenesis, including (but not limited to) race, sex as a biological variable, etc.
  • Develop new tools for the detection and diagnosis of melanoma, which includes easily accessible technology (beyond the dermoscope) for primary care physicians and dermatologists.
  • Identify how the tumor microenvironment (e.g., stromal, immune, microbiome) impacts tumor initiation, response to therapy, progression, recurrence, and/or dormancy.
  • Delineate the molecular pathways that influence metastatic spread, recurrence, and/or dormancy.

Transformative Research on the Basic Mechanisms of Polysubstance use in Addiction (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed): NIH

NIDA seeks to stimulate innovative research that will transform our understanding of the basic mechanisms that underlie polysubstance use in addiction. These studies will investigate novel neurobiological, pharmacological and/or behavioral mechanisms that drive the behavioral and pharmacological profiles observed following polysubstance use. The major goal of the project must be targeted at delineating basic mechanisms underlying polysubstance use in addiction. Projects must focus on combinations of two or more addictive substances with well-justified translational and public health relevance. Research areas and questions of programmatic interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanisms underlying the association of early adolescent polysubstance use with SUD’s in adulthood.
  • Are there sex differences in the development and trajectory of polysubstance use?
  • What are the developmental determinants? Are there developmental windows during which polysubstance use would be facilitated?
  • How do environmental factors interact with brain circuitries to influence the development and trajectory of SUDs involving polysubstance use?
  • How does stress interact with brain circuitries to influence the development and trajectory of SUDs involving polysubstance use?
  • Are there neurobehavioral risk phenotypes for progression to polysubstance use?
  • Preliminary data are not required but may be included if available.
